MALS Student Projects! !
The MALS Cookbook
The idea of creating a MALS cookbook originated in Dr. Michael Wentworth's "Contemporary Issues in Liberal Studies" class in the spring of 2004. While discussing the social, economic, agricultural, and religious role of food in various global cultures, Dr. Wentworth proposed that students produce a MALS cookbook since such a venture would provide a unique opportunity to showcase the MALS program at UNCW, particularly the program's commitment to globalism and cultural diversity. As a result, Martha Poole, Marquita Brown, Betty Brannon, Michael Braxton, and Holly Lentz compiled recipes from fellow MALS students. Recipes run the gamut: Cardiac Dogs, which are not for the faint of heart, literally; delightful pasta salads; "Grandma's down-home fish chowder"; Czech pierogies; and tasty eggnog. Some recipes are accompanied by a story, a poem, or even a song that serves to recreate the authentic cultural dining experience. Who knows, you may even find that long lost recipe in the cookbook!
The cookbook, Advanced Degrees: Cooking with MALS "A CULTURAL EXPERIENCE" , is now available by contacting Perry Campbell, the GLS Program Assistant at campbellp AT uncw DOT edu.
