Below is a brief overview of each program area, but for more information about each area click on the links to the left.

 

ATHLETIC TRAINING:
Students who earn a Bachelor of Arts in Athletic Training may choose to work in professional, collegiate, amateur, and scholastic sport venues to provide preventive injury care to athletes and emergency care to injured athletes as well as follow-up rehabilitative care in athletic training  clinics.

EXERCISE SCIENCE:
Students earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education with a concentration in Exercise Science have extensive training in human anatomy and physiology and the study of human movement. They are qualified to conduct precise exercise testing and exercise prescriptions. Many go on to study physical therapy while others choose to gain certification as a fitness consultant and trainer. 

GERONTOLOGY:
Students can either earn a minor or Master's degree in Gerontology. The program is designed for students who have a general interest in aging and may be considering a career involving the elderly. The 21-semester hour minor encourages students to obtain field experience through service-learning with community partners who work with older adults. The 36-hour Master's program prepares graduates to be aware of all aspects of aging through coursework that is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary.


COMMUNITY HEALTH EDUCATION:
Students may now earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Community Health Education which prepares them to work in the field providing programs that encourage individuals to protect, maintain and improve their levels of health and fitness and to enhance their overall quality of life.  Health education specialists view optimal health as a multi-faceted state involving physical, social, emotional, intellectual, vocational, environmental and spiritual dimensions.  They endeavor to provide individuals and groups with the information and motivation necessary to make informed decisions concerning lifestyle and personal health behavior.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION-TEACHER CERTIFICATION:
Students who earn a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education with a concentration in teaching prepare for the NC Board of Teachers Exam by learning pedagogical methods designed to develop healthy, active lifestyles and address obesity and other health issues that result from inactivity.

 

PARKS AND RECREATION:
Students earning a Bachelor of Arts in Parks and Recreation Management are prepared for employment in a diversity of leisure service and travel and tourism delivery setting and for graduate study. The program is also NRPA/AALR accredited in Leisure Service Management. Within the Parks and Recreation Curriculum, there are presently three areas of concentration: Travel and Commercial Recreation, Public and Non-Profit Recreation, and Recreational Sport Leadership.


RECREATION THERAPY:
Students who earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Recreation Therapy are trained to utilize recreation activities as rehabilitation modalities. Their services complement physical and occupational therapy and address clients’ adjustment to illness or disability and education for a new lifestyle following rehabilitation.
