The HONORS SCHOLARS PROGRAM at UNCW is designed to offer academically talented students challenging and exciting experiences both in and out of the classroom. A student may begin with general honors in the first two years, and then go on to departmental honors in their major. In their freshman and sophomore years, students take special interdisciplinary honors seminars and honors sections of basic studies courses. Honors classes are small--generally not over 20 students--to encourage discussion and faculty-student interaction. In any given semester, an honors scholar will enroll in both honors and other university classes, enhancing his or her experiences in many academic areas with a wide variety of students. In their junior and senior years, honors students will propose and carry out an honors "capstone" experience"--a scholarly project in the student's major. This involves independent work and close interaction with a faculty sponsor. Many of these have led to publication and presentations at professional conferences. Overall, the program encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and independent work skills by offering exciting academic and cultural activities as well as the opportunity for close working and social relationships with the faculty.

Why be an Honors Scholar?

How do I get into the UNCW Honors Scholars Program?

First, apply and get accepted to UNCW. Then, we invite students to apply to the Honors Scholars Program based on their high school grades, SAT scores, and rank in class. Students already at UNCW may enter based on their GPA and hours completed. Students may enter as late as just prior to their senior year for departmental honors.
