Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Created to award study in the fields of mathematics and the natural sciences, the scholarship will cover eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7000 annually.

Eligibility: An applicant must:

• be a matriculated sophomore-level student (student who plans two more years of full-time undergraduate study)

• have a college grade point average of at least "B" and be in the upper fourth of his/her class

• be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national

DEADLINE: February

Morris K. Udall Scholarships

Scholarships awarded to sophomores and juniors in the current academic year who have outstanding potential, and who study the environment and related fields. Each scholar receives up to $5,000, or the cost of tuition, fees, books, and board, which ever is less. Scholarship recipients are eligible for one year of support per application year on the undergraduate level. Nomination required.

Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships in Humanistic Studies

Awards are made for the first year of graduate study for students preparing for careers of teaching and scholarship in humanistic studies. Scholarship will cover tuition and fees plus $13,500.

Eligibility: An applicant must:

• be a college senior and beginning graduate study for the year of award

• applying to a graduate program leading to the Ph.D.

• be a U.S. citizen

• take the GRE by December of senior year

Rhodes Scholarship

Scholarship to the University of Oxford, including tuition, fees plus maintenance allowance for a maximum of three years awarded to students with proven intellectual ability and academic achievement.

Eligibility: An applicant must:

• be between age 18 and 24 in October of the applicant year

• be able to receive bachelor's degree before October of applicant year (i.e. be a graduating senior)

• be a U.S. citizen

DEADLINE: early October

Harry S. Truman Scholarship

Awarded on the basis of merit to students who will be college seniors and who show potential for leadership in public service careers. Covers eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to $3000 a year for undergraduate education and $27,000 for graduate studies.

Eligibility: An applicant must:

• be a full-time junior level student (have one more year of undergraduate study when applying)

• be committed to a career in public service (government; public service -oriented non profit organizations; uniformed services, non-governmental research or education; and others--see brochure)

• be in the upper fourth of his/her class

• be a U.S. citizen

DEADLINE: January for completed application

British Marshall Scholarships

Scholarships to study at any British university for two years, including tuition and fees, a living allowance, books, and travel to the UK. Any field of study, but preference given to students who combine high scholastic achievement and leadership qualities.

Eligibility: An applicant must:

• be a U.S. citizen under age 26 in year of application

• have a completed four-year university degree before starting scholarship

• have a GPA of at least 3.7 after freshman year

Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship

Established in 1932, the Fellowship Program awards annually sixty Fellowships of $5,000 each and forty Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each for post-graduate study at accredited institutions of higher learning. The one-hundred scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis for first-year graduate or professional study. Each chapter may nominate one student for the national competition. All national nominees receive a one-year active membership in Phi Kappa Phi.

Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Scholarship

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program will award approximately 35 scholarships to college seniors or recent graduates to attend graduate programs in fall 2004.  The scholarship awards will provide funding for tuition, room and board, books, and other required fees for the length of the graduate degree program, up to six years.  The amount and duration of awards will vary by student, based on the cost of attendance and length of the program as well as other scholarships or grants received.  The maximum award per student is $50,000 per year.

 

National Science Foundation- Graduate Research Fellowships

David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships for Study Abroad (National Security Education Program)

Scholarship to first-year students, sophomores, juniors, and seniors for summer or semester/year study abroad in non-Western European countries. The focus is primarily on language training in languages not traditionally chosen by Americans. A mandatory internship with a government agency is required at some point after completion of the scholarship. The amount of the scholarship is based on financial need as well as the cost of the study abroad program selected. Maximum is $10,000 per academic term.
 

Eligibility: An applicant must:

• be a U.S. citizen at the time of application

• be matriculated as freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior at a U.S. university or college

The study abroad program must meet UNCW's standards and must end before the student graduates.

Fulbright U. S. Graduate Student Program
 
Grants fund a full academic year of study or research abroad in all disciplines. This merit-based grant funds round-trip international travel, a monthly stipend for living expenses, and supplemental insurance.
 

Eligibility: An applicant must:

• be a U.S. citizen

• have a completed four-year university degree before beginning date of the grant

• demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the written and spoke language of the host country

• be in good health
