The Center for Marine Science at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is offering two exceptional research fellowships in marine biotechnology. Candidates must have a PhD in a biotechnology-related area and are expected to conduct research in marine science laboratories at the University while pursuing a professional MBA degree in the University’s Cameron School of Business. The goal of this 35 month program is to produce individuals with a solid science background as well as the business skills needed to prosper in a modern competitive business environment. Students in the MBA portion of the program will master the core functions of business, develop analytical and quantitative business skills, and study current and future business issues through real world experiences with regional companies involved in marine biotechnology. Excellent verbal and written skills are required.
The research portion of the program generally involves working in the focus areas of Marine pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals from cultured organisms (bio-prospecting), bioengineered natural products, novel enzymes, immuno-assays and biosynthetic pathways. Candidates should clearly identify their interests in the focus area in their cover letter. Selected candidates would receive salary and benefits including health insurance and retirement contributions for 35 months. Position title will be “Visiting Research Assistant Professor”. Tuition for the coursework necessary to obtain the MBA is also provided.
Screening of the applicants will begin September 1, 2009 and applicants will be invited to join the program January 1, 2010 and will be enrolled in the MBA program May 1, 2010. All degree requirements must be met by December 1 to qualify for the fellowship.
