Mark Spaulding studied at the University of Cologne, Germany before obtaining his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1989. He is now Associate Professor of History with interests in Modern Europe; especially Germany and its relations with both Eastern and Western Europe. His research interests most often focus on issues of political and economic interaction at both the national and international levels.
    Spaulding's 1997 book, Osthandel and Ostpolitik, examined the relative weights of economic and political motivations in Germany's trade policies toward Eastern Europe over the course of several regime changes, from 1890 to 1960. The book was a finalist for the American Historical Association's George Louis Beer Prize. His publications 
have appeared in International Organization , Diplomatic History, and several edited volumes.
    Spaulding is currently working on economic and political 
integration in Germany and Europe in the early nineteenth century
