Learning Opportunities

Department faculty are committed to offering students a powerful learning experience, and students are urged to take their studies as far as their imaginations and work ethics allow.  In addition to traditionally small classes in upper-level courses, particularly at the seminar level, the department encourages independent study (HST 491), involvement in internships, and active student involvement in faculty research for student academic credit (HST 291).  History students, in close collaboration with faculty, have presented papers and offered presentations at local and regional conferences, participated in mounting exhibitions, student taught in local high schools, participated in department expeditions to historical sites and research libraries, and designed and executed multiple-semester honors projects.

“The strongest feature of the history major is that it forces students to read, write and think critically.”

--UNCW history student
