November, 2005 Welcome from Dr. Sue McCaffray, Chair Welcome to the UNCW History Department homepage. As you visit the sites on this page you will come to understand that students and faculty in our department look out on the world in all directions. We are enthusiastically engaged in the study of our own society and in societies across time and space. We seek to understand human beings and the worlds they have made by employing the tools of historical inquiry. We craft significant questions, employ tools both old and new to locate sources, and evaluate evidence in our effort to craft insightful interpretations. Our faculty consists of 20 scholar-teachers who guide students toward the B.A. in History. Requirements for the B.A. include three substantial research projects, one at the sophomore level and two senior seminars. We also direct independent study projects and Honors theses. Our faculty is integral to a number of area-studies minors as well as Cornerstone Learning Communities and the Honors Scholars Program. We work closely with the Watson School of Education to train social studies teachers. In addition, we offer instruction to each and every UNCW undergraduate through our basic studies courses. At the M.A. level we offer graduate students the opportunity to concentrate in one of four areas: U.S. History, European History, Global History and Public History. Our program, in existence since1989, provides students the opportunity to work with nationally and internationally renowned faculty members in a one-on-one setting and prepares them for success in major Ph.D. programs or for careers in Public History, research, teaching and publishing. If this virtual visit piques your interest, why not visit us in person?
