Common Registration Issues

Q: I filled out paperwork indicating the courses that I want to take during my stay at UNCW. Does this paperwork register my classes?

A: No, this does not register you for classes. You will still need to register for your classes via Seanet. As many other problems can stem from this common mistake, it is very important to register as soon as you can.

Q: I would like to register for my courses on Seanet, but I do not know my pin. How do I find this information?

A: Your pin is created for you when you are admitted to UNCW. You should be able to log in to Seanet using your birthdate as your pin in MonthDayYear (MMDDYY) format.

Q: I am attempting to register for classes via seanet, but I keep getting messages about registration errors. What do they mean?

A: There are several errors that you may encounter within Seanet.

The first error you may encounter is a "Major Restriction" error. This error is common to anyone attempting to register for courses within the Cameron School of Business, or the Watson School of Education. The courses within these Schools are reserved for students who have been accepted into one of their programs. If you are studying business or education, and require one of these courses, an override will have to be requested from the respective School. Simply alert us to the problem, and we will send the necessary documentation to the appropriate person.

The next error you may encounter is a "Prerequisite" error. This error is related to advanced courses, and will require the appropriate department to evaluate your transcript in order to determine whether you have had courses that have prepared you adequately for the course you are attempting to register for. Once again, simply alert us to the problem, and we can send a copy of your transcript to the appropriate person.

Next, there are some courses that require placement tests. These will result in a "Test Score-Error." In order to resolve this, contact the department responsible for the course you are attempting to register for. You may be required to take a placement test before registration.

The last error that is commonly seen by international students is the "Departmental Approval" error. This may occur with registration for upper-level courses, as well as with courses within departments that have special requirements for enrollment. For instance, upper-level music courses require an audition in order for enrollment. Without this audition, anyone attempting to register for these courses receives a Departmental Approval error. In the Music Department case, there is no current remedy beyond scheduling an audition. In other cases, we may be able to resolve the issue for you, on a case-by-case basis.

Q: A course that I need to register for is closed. Is there any way to get into a class once it is filled?

A: Yes, there is always a chance. Some professors are happy to allow a few extra students to register, as they know that some students will drop out of the course before the first day of class. Contacting your professor ahead of time could result in your being registered for a course that you would not have been able to register for, otherwise. Also, many students will simply wait until the first day that registration reopens in order to move courses around in their schedule. This shifting during the drop/add period can result in openings where there previously were none. These windows of opportunity may be brief, but they do exist. Don't give up hope. Odds are, you will get into everything you want.

Q: What is this "drop/add" period I keep hearing about?

A: Drop/Add is the term used to refer to the period of time when registration reopens, just before classes begin, up until the point at which students may no longer register for more classes, or withdraw from class without penalty.

Q: What is the difference between a "W" and a "WF?"

A: A "W" is a withdrawal, and carries no penalty. If you withdraw from a course during the drop/add period, this is the grade you will receive for that course. A "WF" is indicative of withdrawing from a course after the drop/add period. This grade is equivalent to an "F."

Q: How are "Credit Hours" different from the units my home institution uses?

A: In order to determine precisely how your courses here will convert when you return home, it is necessary to contact someone in our office. We are currently attempting to put together a list of the conversions, but it is not yet available online.

Q: How do I set up my email?

A: If you have not registered for classes, your email will not be active. You will have your username, but will not be able to log in. In order to set the password for your email, you will have to click on the link to "change password," under the campus email link, on the "current students" page. Then, simply follow the instructions that are found here.
