Department Web Pages

Requirements

Department Web sites must adhere to the UNCW Web Style Guide and should use Contribute software software to maintain their pages.

How it Works

As a Web site grows and becomes more complex, there is a great need for content management. UNCW’s Web site, with its thousands of Web pages, is a perfect example. To cope with this growth, ITSD introduced a new time-saving option for keeping Web sites up to date.

ITSD Technology Research & Development and UNCW Marketing & Communications work with each department or division to construct the framework (or template) for Web pages, with coherent navigation and a consistent "look and feel". Persons responsible for maintaining Web page content (referred to as "content managers") then use Contribute to update and modify all text and photo content. The software is especially easy to use.

One of the many benefits of this content management system is that it helps to insure our Web pages are:

This approach enables faculty and staff to manage their Web content quickly and easily. As a staff person in the College's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures said, "I have found this program a delight to work with."

Getting Started

  1. The process for creating a new site, or redesigning an existing site, begins with Web Site Project Request form from Marketing & Communications.

  2. Contact the TAC (tac@uncw.edu) to have your building consultant install Contribute software on your computer.
Note: After 30 days you will need a license to continue using the software. Please see the Ordering Contribute page for more information.

  3. Before you can use Contribute to maintain a department Web site, you will need permissions to the appropriate directory on the main UNCW Web server.

  4. Once permissions are established, a senior web developer will send you a "connection key" to get started editing content at once.

  5. All content managers should attend a Contribute workshop, offered by the Technology Assistance Center.
