On April 4, 2008, UNCW Marine Mammal Stranding team received a call of a possible humpback whale stranding at Waves, NC and left immediately for the Outer Banks. On April 5, 2008, the UNCW team met a number of National Park Service rangers on the beach and started the necropsy. The necropsy was completed at 12:30 and the remainder of the carcass was buried on site. The NPS collected the entire skull to be put on display in the Outer Banks.
