On February 24, 2009 Oak Island Police reported a dead stranded bottlenose dolphin. The carcass was brought back to UNCW for an external examination and then placed into the freezer for a necropsy on May 23, 2009. The carcass was in very good and robust body condition. External examination showed evidence of positive human interaction. Internal examination revealed mulitple enlarged lymph nodes and spleen, and a light load of lung worms. Final determination of cause of death is pending further findings from the pathology report.
