What is RSS?

RSS is a standard XML format for delivering content that changes on a regular basis. Content is delivered in small chunks, generally a synopsis, preview, or headline. Using a special program called a "feed readers" or "RSS aggregator", you can easily track any type of information that changes on a daily or even hourly basis from multiple sites. That way, a user can be quickly notified of new content from favorite sources without having to manually check the site for updates.

Where can I get a news aggregator?

Here are a few free resources to help you get started.

  • BlogLines (free Web-based aggregator)
  • Sharp Reader (free aggregator)
  • Newer Web browsers also act as news readers. For example, Firefox users can click the orange icon at the bottom right of their browser when a news feed is available: Firefox news feed icon

Some of these are standalone applications, others run in your browser. This is in no way a complete listing nor does UNCW specifically recommend any reader in particular. Many types of news aggregators, or readers, are available.
