GLY 489 - Contemporary Issues in Geosciences. The capstone course for the B.A. degree program in Geology. In this class you will be directed to integrate your academic and laboratory background as an undergraduate by way of three projects. The projects are directed at the areas of 1) experimental design and investigation, 2) collaborative directed topic study, and 3) "Instant Expert" requests. There is no textbook for this class, but outside readings, library and NET research, and field collection of data will be a major component of this course. Lecture and directed projects (3). Evaluation of projects based upon oral and poster (POWERPOINTTM) presentations and written summaries of field or research results.
GLY 101 - Principles of Geology. An introduction to the Earth on which you live. Overview of the formation of the Earth, our investigations into the age and development of the Earth, the hypothesis of plate tectonics, and the resultant interactions on the surface and interior of the Earth over geologic time. Topics range from the important processes of earthquakes and volcanism to the areas of medical aspects of earth materials and energy resources. Textbook is Essentials of Geology (10th edition; find a used copy). There will be out-of-class readings, multi-media viewing opportunities (with questions), and visits to selected NET sites. Lecture course with two (2) examinations (mid-term and final), several pop quizzes, and the occasional directed project.
Summer 2009
UNCW - Department of Geography and Geology Field Course
Dr. David Blake runs the Department's GLY 470 Geology Field Course (6 credit hours) every summer. Students from other North Carolina schools, as well as students from other universities can attend. For further information about the UNCW 2009 Geology Field Course contact Dr. Blake .
East Carolina - UNC Geology Field Course
In addition to being one of the instructors for this 6 credit hour summer field course in geologic mapping run through the Department of Geology at East Carolina University (ECU), I also help maintain the Geology Field Course homepage for them. The 2009 geology field course will be from 14 May to 21 June 2009 and examine geologic features in New Mexico and south-central Colorado. Students from the North Carolina schools (UNC-Charlotte, Chapel Hill, East Carolina) as well as students from other universities can attend. For further information about the 2009 field course - either contact Dr. Steve Harper at ECU or just to look at some of the photographs and information for the geology field course, use the following link:
