Education
Ph.D., University of Havana
From theSpring 2000 Newsletter:
The Cuban-born Dr. Hernandez
struggled to escape Castro's tyranny,
finally settling in Wilmington with her
husband and five children in 1963. She
was appointed to Associate Professor
with tenure in 1968. Dr. Hernandez's
ability to interest students in Physics is
legendary, but she especially liked to
encourage women to study the
sciences. As a student at the University
of Havana, Dr. Hernandez
doesn't remember it being such a big
deal that she was a woman in what
has been -at least in the United States a
male-dominated field. Dr.
Hernandez wanted her students to
be as curious and eager to learn as she
was. "I like to get them excited about
learning", said Dr. Hernandez, who
was recognized as recently as last
year for excellence in teaching.
