As the cartoon suggests, genetic engineering may not be what you think!  If you want to manipulate genes, study biochemistry. If you want to take the fruits of the biochemist's labor and design systems to mass produce it so that it will be affordable for the good of humanity then study chemical or biochemical engineering.  However, chemical engineering is a very good preparation for further study in the field of genetic alteration.
