Distance Education Course Information

The following applies to UNCW students (others should contact the director) who want to take an engineering course on site at UNCW through distance education at NCSU. BE SURE to read everything on this page. If you were dropped because of nonpayment, visit THIS page instead! If you are having problems login in to your unity account or forgot your unity password, visit this site.

  • To take an undergraduate distance education (DE) course from NCSU, you need to apply to NCSU as a non-degree seeking student with the distance education program at NCSU. Go to this web page:

and click on the link titled Online NDS Application. Complete the application process step by step as directed by the web pages. When you are asked to enter the school you are currently attending put: UNCW (2+2 engineering program). When you are asked to enter an email address, BE SURE YOU ENTER A VALID EMAIL ADDRESS! Email will be the only line of communication the DE program office will use to contact you.

When your application has been approved and it could take a day or two, you will get an email sent to the address you entered in the application that says (READ IT VERY CAREFULLY):

"We have approved your Non-Degree Studies Application for Fall 2009.

Enrollment during the fall or spring semester will automatically make you eligible for the following semester provided that you meet or exceed grade point average (GPA) requirements. Summer admission will make you eligible to take courses during the fall semester provided that you meet the minimum high school graduation requirement.

Please check the enrollment calendar for specific dates of enrollment for non-degree students (UGS or PBS): http://www.ncsu.edu/registrar/calendars.

    LOGIN & ENROLL IN COURSES:

Your Unity ID is: jjseahaw (first and middle initials and the first six letters of your last name)
Your Student ID Number is: 000xxxxxx

Course enrollment at NC State is available online through MyPack Portal: http://mypack.ncsu.edu. (Note: students wishing to take engineering courses will NOT enroll this way. See the next bullet below.) Students may change personal or academic information as well as semester schedules from any computer with Internet access through this self-service system.

You will log into the system using your Unity ID and password. Your default password is the last four digits of your student ID number followed by the month and day of your birth (mmdd). For example, if your student ID is 000111234 and your birthday is July 4th, your default Unity password will be 12340704. Students are required to change their password before their initial attempt to log into the portal: http://www.ncsu.edu/password. If you need assistance with your login please contact the HELP desk. 919 515 HELP.

    STUDENT E-MAIL:

Unity e-mail is the official campus e-mail address for all students (non-employees).

Your Unity e-mail address is: cmschoon@ncsu.edu. You can check your Unity e-mail at http://webmail.ncsu.edu.

Your preferred e-mail address will be changed to your Unity account after you enroll in courses. You will be notified by e-mail prior to the change. At that time, it will become the ONLY address to which official e-mail communication from NC State will be sent. However, you can use the university's e-mail forwarding service if you prefer to continue receiving e-mail from NC State at the other address. For more information, please visit http://help.ncsu.edu.

Email correspondence to and from this sender is subject to the N.C. Public Records Law and may be disclosed to third parties."

If you do not get an email after about one week, that probably means you entered your email address incorrectly and need to call them.

Important!! - BE SURE you keep a copy of the email shown above so that you know your unity ID, student ID, and initial password.

  • Next you will need to go to the following web address:
  • engnineeeringonline.ncsu.edu

and click on the Registration link in the upper left-hand corner of the page. DO NOTE TRY TO FIND OR REGISTER FOR A COURSE! The Director will do that. Just complete the application (registration) process.

  • Once you have completed this application contact the director and he will have you officially registered(enrolled) for the course(s) you want to take.
  • BE SURE TO complete a UNCW transient study form. Instructions are found here.
  • When you take a distance education (DE) course from Engineering Online as part of the Pre-Engineering Transfer program, you are taking a DE section of a regularly scheduled NCSU engineering course. Therefore when you finish the course, you will receive a grade that will become part of your permanent NCSU transcript even though you most likely have not yet been admitted as a degree-seeking student at NCSU. If your average GPA in all of the NCSU DE courses you take is less than a 2.0, you will not be eligible for admittance to NCSU until you have raised your GPA to above a 2.0. This is a university admissions requirement and has nothing to do with distance education or Engineering Online.
  • Just as a reminder, NCSU will use your unity email address for all academic correspondence. You will not be able to use a personal or UNCW email address. You can have the NCSU email server forward NCSU email to another address. Use mypackportal to do this.
  • For the courses you take, bookmark the course Web pages in your Web browser if you own a PC. These will be provided on the course syllabus and will be an essential part of the course. You should check these Web pages several times a week because instructors will often post materials you need without notice. If you want to access a course Web page from a computer other than your own, you can also find the course Web pages at engineeringonline.ncsu.edu. Select "Online Courses" and then "Course Web Site Listing for the .... Semester".

  • Because the course(s) you are taking originate(s) from NCSU, the calendar on which NCSU operates may be different from UNCW. This may mean that the NCSU course starts later or earlier than UNCW courses. It also means that the course may end later or earlier than UNCW courses, and exams may have to be taken later or earlier than UNCW exams. It is your responsibility to plan for this when deciding when to vacate the UNCW campus or Wilmington for vacation or work. Most instructors will expect you to take the exam when it is scheduled at NCSU. Do not assume otherwise.
  • When you complete the DE course(s) and receive a grade, promptly request that a transcript be sent from NCSU to UNCW. This is especially true if you are receiving financial aid and insurance coverage from your parents or if you decide to remain at UNCW instead of transferring. Doing this in essence completes the transient study forms. Transcripts can be obtained from NCSU through this Web site.
  • Once you have been registered, it is very important that you verify that Toni Bellingrath knows that you are receiving financial aid if you are.
  • If any of your registration information such as address, etc., changes, be sure to update this information at the NCSU mypack.ncsu.edu.
  • Unless your DE course(s) has a small enrollment (1 or 2), the textbook for your course(s) will normally be available from the UNCW bookstore. Textbooks for any DE course can be obtained from the NCSU bookstore if need be.
  • Many DE courses require engineering paper. It is available from the UNCW bookstore and some office supply stores.
