BA in Psychology Requirements

Academic Requirements

The B.A. degree in Psychology requires 49 hours of course work in psychology, consisting of (a) PSY 105, 225, 355, & 405; (b) one course from each of the five categories listed below; and (c) twelve additional hours in Psychology courses at the 300-400 level.  PSY 210, 245 or 265 may be substituted for three of these additional twelve hours.

  • Category 1: PSY 220, 221, 223, 320, or 324.
  • Category 2: PSY 410, 412 or 417.
  • Category 3: PSY 418, 456 or 457.
  • Category 4: PSY 346, 347 or 365
  • Category 5: PSY 350, 352, 425 or 465.

The following additional requirements must also be met:

  • A grade of C or better is required in PSY 105.
  • PSY 225, PSY 355, & the PSY-Category 2 course must be taken in sequence; thus, students are advised to begin this sequence as earlier as possible.
  • No more than one course with a grade of D can count toward the requirements for a major in Psychology.
  • There must be a C (2.0) or better average on all courses that are counted towards the major.
  • Students must complete a Biology course selected from BIO 105, BIO 140 (with laboratory BIO 140L), BIO 201 (aka BIO 204 or BIO 110), BIO 202 (aka BIO 206) or BIO 240.
  • Students must complete a Mathematics course selected from MAT 111, MAT 112, MAT 115, MAT 151, or a more advanced mathematics course.

Additional notes: In order to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology a student must have completed 124 semester hours of credit including basic studies, major requirements, and unspecified electives. For students graduating between 1990 and 1992, the median time to completion of the degree for a student entering with no college credit was 46.8 months. Graduation may be delayed if students change majors after the first semester of their junior year or if they fail to begin the required sequence of courses when they enter the major. If outside responsibilities prevent taking fifteen to sixteen hours a semester the student's graduation date may be postponed.
