The Staff Senate’s November 2009 Teal Spotlight: Jennifer Smist
The Teal Spotlight, presented by the UNCW Staff Senate, highlights the dedicated staff members on the campus of UNCW. The staff member is chosen at random for an interview, and for the month of November 2009 Jennifer Smist was selected for the Teal Spotlight.
Relaxing at the beach and reading a good book is how Jennifer Smist likes to spend her time when she is not working on the campus of UNCW. When she is on the campus of UNC Wilmington, Jennifer is the Assistant Director for the Center for Leadership Education and Service where she communicates and promotes workshops to students regarding leadership, community service and involvement outside the classroom.
Prior to her career here at UNCW, Jennifer earned a Master of Arts degree in Counseling and Personnel Services, with a concentration in College Student Personnel, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. She has prior experience in leadership education and development, community service-learning, civic engagement, and research and assessment. In addition, Jennifer served two years as an AmeriCorps*VISTA member with Massachusetts Campus Compact.
Jennifer’s biggest challenge in her job position is keeping the current programs and workshops interesting and technologically up to date, along with balancing all the programs they would like to have available to students with the resources at hand.
Over the past three years Jennifer has worked at UNCW, the most rewarding part of her job is working along side the first group of undergraduates and witnessing how much they matured in those three short years. She is just so positive about program and the progression of the students in regards to their leadership skills. Jennifer also emphasized the reward in cross training job skills from one student to the next for themselves, and for the betterment of the Center for Leadership Education and Service area.
A free lunch certificate, donated by UNCW Campus Dining Service to Dub’s Cafe, was presented to Jennifer Smist in appreciation for a job well done. Congratulations to Jennifer Smist, this month’s Teal Spotlight.
