WELCOME
TO THE SMART GROWTH HOME PAGE!
The
Paving the American Dream Educator's Resource Web site was designed and
written to complement the information and perspectives presented in the
documentary Paving the American Dream: Southern Cities, Shores & Sprawl.
The site is full of dynamic learning activities geared for students in
grades six through twelve, a time during students' lives when their curriculum
includes the study of environmental sciences and related subjects. Perhaps
more importantly, it is a time in a young adult's development when social
consciousness begins to mature and the accountability of human activity
is examined for its merit and consequences. Today's students are keenly
aware that America's natural resources are under stress and could be highly
degraded or lost during their generation in the absence of planned preservation,
conservation and sustainable use and management.
 The
objective of this Web site is to engage students in hands-on exploration
and activities that further their understanding of both the natural systems
and human history of the industrialization and development of southern
cities, suburbs, industrial centers and coastal areas. It is our hope
that this resource will offer students information, balanced perspectives
and challenging experiences that advance their abilities to become inspired,
informed and proactive decision-makers, problem-solvers throughout their
lives.
