From rulings on coastal developments, buffer and rebuilding regulations, and land-use plans to news releases about the latest offshore drilling attempts, detailed descriptions about islands in the NC Coastal Reserve Program, and an extensive identification table of wetlands plants, this site incorporates a myriad of information about a diversity of topics.

The Cape Fear River Watch, Inc.
Growth affects more than just our land — it affects our waterways and coastal areas as well. This site gives information about the Cape Fear River and more.

Coastal America
Coastal America is the home site for a partnership of federal agencies serving coastal environments. As stated on their Web site, the organization's purpose is to "integrate the capabilities of existing resources... to address specific local problems by sharing information, pooling resources, and combining management skills and technical expertise." A wide variety of issues are addressed, including habitat loss and degradation, non-point source to sustainable development to pollution and contaminated sediments.

North Carolina Coastal Federation

NC Cooperative Extension

Clean Water Fund of NC

Cape Fear Cyclists
Wilmington's bicycle advocacy group works to promote biking for fitness, the environment, and reduced traffic congestion. The organization implements and supports the Wilmington Bicycle Advisory Committee. North Carolina Rail-Trails

National Association of Realtors
The National Association of Realtors is the world's largest professional association. On its site is information about a variety of smart growth related issues, including their platform statement, which includes a section about their position on smart growth: "REALTORS® sell quality of life as much as houses and understand the importance of a clean environment, good schools, safe neighborhoods, efficient transportation systems, and open spaces and parks. At the same time, REALTORS® are wary of regulatory approaches that would reduce housing choice and affordability, distort real estate markets, or threaten private property rights."

American Institute of Architects
The AIA commits itself to high standards and ethics. The site is designed primarily for architects, yet it also includes
information regarding smart growth and the principles the organization views as essential to smart-growth communities .

American Planning Association
This site is a great resource to planners and people interested in town and neighborhood planing. With information about city parks and land-based classification standards to sustainable development and neighborhood collaborative planning.

Center for Livable Communities

Downtown Area Revitalization Effort, Inc.
Wilmington's Downtown Area Revitalization Effort, Inc., promotes and provides information about our community's heart. The Seaside Institute

Rural Policy Research Institute
RUPI's mission is providing analysis and facilitating public dialogue "concerning the impacts of public policy on rural people and places." From its Web site, users can easily access data about and definitions of rural America, as well as reports about rural issues, including agriculture and rural development.

National Public Radio's The Changing Face of America Program
Although this popular radio series covers a wide range of topics, from racially blended marriages, to the ways elderly citizens are adapting to a rapidly evolving workplace, a number of pieces relate to smart growth. Such pieces include an explanation of how sprawl is a planned method of development and a definition of what makes a city livable. A show about runaway growth in Charlotte, North Carolina, aired in August.

Historic Wilmington Foundation
Wilmington's own historic foundation's Web site offers everything from listings of historic apartments for rent and homes for sale to links to other statewide historic preservation groups.

Zebulon Latimer House, Lower Cape Fear Historical Society Headquarters
This historic Wilmington house also quarters the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society. Visit this site for information about the building's beginnings in 1852 and information about the historical society.

North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources
In addition to overseeing state museums, the Department of Cultural resources also is involved with archaeological research and historic preservation. This Web site provides a number of links to related programs and facilities. Visit the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office, complete with links to information about archaeology to disaster response to data about your own county.

National Trust for Historic Preservation
The National Trust for Historic Preservation provides a center for information and news on historic preservation efforts across that country.

Preservation North Carolina
Complete with a listing of historic properties on the market and an online guide to historic sites throughout the state, this Web site is a great resource for information about our state's historic preservation efforts and successes.

Ocracoke Preservation Society
Established more than 15 years ago, the Ocacroke Preservation Society records and preserve this unique barrier island's history. Its Web site contains archival pictures and information about the organization, as well as a contact e-mail address.

From this site, users can access information about numerous smart growth topics and recommended literary resources, as well as the latest smart growth news from each state in the nation. Although the Sonoran Institute focuses upon the west, this site is an excellent resource for information about a variety of smart growth issues, including the roles of various people in smart growth and publications of smart growth policies by governments throughout the country.
