Numbering only 8 million people in 1960, by 2015 it's estimated that 23 million will live along the coast.

Paving the American Dream

When the University of North Carolina at Wilmington began work in 1998 on the "smart growth" documentary, Paving the American Dream: Southern Cities, Shores & Sprawl, there was very little available by way of resource information. The term "smart growth" has even been difficult to define since it is such a broad-spectrum concept that encompasses many diverse ideas. An architect might define it in terms of community design while the city planner would define it in terms of infrastructure, and the developer might define it in terms of land use.

In the last several years, however, many organizations have arisen or expanded their scope so that they now promote and track smart growth concepts, development plans, and future trends.
