Dean's Welcome

Greetings and welcome to UNCW School of Nursing.

Two words characterize the UNC Wilmington School of Nursing: growth and change. Obvious growth and change are manifest in student enrollment, faculty recruitment and program expansion. To support the growth and change, the General Assembly has awarded the university $30.1 million to design and construct a new School of Nursing facility.

Undergraduate enrollment in both the pre-licensure nursing and clinical research programs are growing the fastest. BS enrollment has doubled in the pre-licensure program and tripled in the clinical research curriculum. With the addition of the BS in Clinical Research, students now have another option for their education. Graduate programming has increased with the addition of the nurse educator option to the family nurse practitioner option. Recently, the post master's certificate in nursing education was implemented.

Faculty has doubled in membership and over half of them have the added certification of nurse practitioner attached to other credentials, including certified nurse educator. Specialties are in women’s health, pediatrics, geriatrics, family and adult health.

As we celebrate approximately 40 years of nursing education, including over 20 years of baccalaureate education, we are proud of nursing education’s history at UNCW and celebrate its future. The faculty has an absolute commitment to technology including human patient simulation. Construction of our new SON facility will be based on a dynamic 21st century health care system strongly supported by technology.  Students are very excited about current and anticipated use of technology in the curriculum.
