The mission of University Advancement is to raise private funds to further the university’s mission of excellence in teaching, research and public service.
In doing so, the division plans strategically to facilitate the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of all resources, and seeks to positively promote the university to all constituencies.
University Advancement employs strategic partnerships across the campus to represent primary constituent areas of the university, and to assist and support other constituencies.
University Advancement abides by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) code of ethics, a copy of which may be obtained from the office of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement.
Decentralized Development Model
The decentralized development model closely aligns development directors with the respective primary constituent areas. This allows each development director to be more knowledgeable and effective in promoting and fund raising for their respective area. In most cases, the development director is housed in the same area as the dean or constituent leader to allow these individuals to work closely together.
Centralized Development Support
The central advancement office provides a coordinating role through a system of prospect management, which identifies potential donors as best suited for a particular development director, thus preventing multiple solicitations. The central office also provides the support operations of prospect research, direct mail and telemarketing, gift acknowledgment and processing.
Before beginning any fund raising solicitations or campaign projects, all university departments, student groups, and individual faculty and staff must obtain prior approval from the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development. This includes direct solicitation by phone, mail, e-mail, or in person of individuals, corporations, and foundations for both cash and in-kind gifts. Advancement utilizes standardized gift and scholarship agreements and phone/mail solicitation guidelines to facilitate all fund raising efforts.
Gifts obtained by departments, faculty or staff must be directly related to an educational purpose. The university is not obligated to accept any item (liquid or in-kind) that does not support the academic program. All gifts must be recorded through advancement services, and questions concerning acceptance or receipt of any gift should be directed to the office of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement. Noncompliance with these guidelines may result in the loss of non-profit status.
