My role at the Career Center
I am one of 2 Assistant Directors here at the Career Center @ UNCW. I act as Liaison to the Cameron School of Business and I have an office in that building (CH 240g).
My career path
My career path is quite unique. When I started college way back in 1982, I learned the hard way that I was not cut out for college AT ALL , so I started to work shortly after I left school in 1984. I worked in the service industry (for profit, not for profit) for 15 years. In 1997,I decided it was time to go back to school, and I I received a B.S. in Education in 1999 specializing in Human Services/Counseling. I fell in love with college student career counseling (I did my internshsip with the Career Management Center at my alma mater[ODU]) and so I went on to get my Masters and here I am.
The rewards in doing what I do
...
getting to work with college students every day. I don’t have kids of my own, so I think that my maternal instincts and strong sense of independence, intuition, and responsibility make me an effective counselor. I am fascinated by peoples’ stories and I love to listen to what they have to say and work as a team to discover solutions. Plus, I get to work at one of the prettiest campuses I’ve ever been on and with some of the coolest people on the planet.
My words of wisdom to students
U use these words “Get out of your own way” every day. Never let fear get in the way of your potential – if you are scared, talk it through with someone - you’d be surprised how much you have to offer. You are not “just a college student” – you have A LOT to offer this world.
When I’m not on campus
I am a “Mom” to my cat Percy, and dog Sam – we love to spend time together reading and basking in the sun (←). I love pets (sometimes more than people wink…)
