About Sarah

My role at the Career Center

As a Career Development Counselor at the Career Center, I work primarily with students majoring in Math, Statistics, and the Sciences. I advise students wishing to intern and work internationally and co-coordinate the Minority Mentor Program.

My career path

I received my undergraduate degree in Psychology from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN with the intention of becoming a child psychologist. During my time at Rhodes I participated in an internship in an adolescent psychiatric ward of a children’s hospital and discovered that I was not cut out for child psychology. After taking a year off to work at Habitat for Humanity as a Volunteer Services Coordinator through an AmeriCorps program I discovered that I could help others in different ways and looked into career counseling as a result of (ironically) a career assessment. I completed my M.S./Ed.S in Counseling and Human Systems with a specialization in Career Counseling at Florida State University in 2006 and was lucky enough to join the staff at UNCW!

The rewards in doing what I do

I love the personal connections that I get to make with students and the knowledge that I’ve truly made a difference in their job and/or career search. I also enjoy the teaching aspect of my job. I truly believe in the old adage, “Give a person a fish and they will eat for a day, teach a person to fish and they will eat for a lifetime.”  We can critique resumes and give feedback on interviews, but when students really learn how to access those skills themselves I feel like I have succeeded.

My words of wisdom to students

Take control of your own life and your own decisions. It’s your life-you are living it. Don’t be afraid to take risks at this point. Try something you might not normally do, go somewhere you’ve always wanted to, but never had the opportunity. Let us know what you want to do and we’ll help you find the resources.

When I’m not on campus….I’m hanging out with friends on the beach or at a concert; eating out at one of Wilmington’s great restaurants; or planning yet another theme party. I can also frequently be found watching a movie from my never-ending Netflix queue or reading a book from the always growing stack on my bookshelf
