College Mentors
College Mentors are undergraduate or graduate students who work with the Crossroads High School program to deliver our drug abuse prevention program in high schools in New Hanover County and nationwide. Crossroads High School is an evidence-based drug abuse prevention program that includes an interactive curriculum and structured out-of-class activities designed to delay and prevent drug use in high school students. The Crossroads High School program relies on a team of specially-trained high school peer educators and teachers to implement the curriculum and out-of-class activities. College Mentors assist in training these teams and provide on-going guidance and assistance and serve as mentors to peer educators as they deliver Crossroads in their schools. Mentors conduct weekly peer educator after-school meetings in local schools and are available for consultation for distance schools through our Call Center. These positions are hourly, 8-12 hours per week.
Peer Educators
Peer Educators promote substance abuse prevention on campus through educational programming, service, and outreach efforts of CROSSROADS. Peer Educators develop and execute ideas for campus events and educational programs on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. They are expected to attend CROSSROADS events, actively educate other students, and develop a thorough working knowledge of alcohol and drug issues after training. Peer Educators are paid an hourly rate and work 8-10 hours each week for Fall and Spring semesters.
Gender & Alcohol Peers (GAP)
Gender and Alcohol Peers reduce substance abuse on campus through educational programming and discussions of gender roles and expectations related to alcohol use. GAPs co-facilitate programs and discussions of gender and high-risk drinking for student organizations and classes. They are expected to develop a thorough working knowledge of alcohol and substance abuse, gender roles and issues, facilitating intergroup dialogue, and communication after training. GAPs are paid a stipend per semester and work a minimum of 12 hours each month for 2 semesters.
