New Parking Code Ammendment / New Speed Limit Change on Wood Dale Drive

Amendment to the City Parking Code!
Article IV, “Parking”, of the City Code: University Area Parking on Residential Lots

The University/Community Relations Task Force and neighboring residents combined efforts to help facilitate the new Division 7 ordinance. The change comes from a need to protect the residential character of neighborhoods surrounding the University.

“How does this affect me?”

  • Unlimited parking of owner occupied vehicles.
  • No more than two non-owner occupied vehicles in the front yard.
  • Does not apply to side or rear yards.
  • Does not apply to State of North Carolina holidays.

“How will the new code be enforced?”

  • Before enforcement, an information letter will be sent to all property owners and tenants in the area.
  • Complaint and patrol driven; by code enforcement staff.
  • Photos of license plates taken and verified to determine residency.
  • $100.00 citations issued to property owner/tenant on the third violation within a thirty day period, with escalating fines for each violation.

Attention Speeders on Wood Dale Drive!! Slow Down and Don’t Get a Ticket!

Members of the university community who travel to campus from Wrightsville Avenue along Wood Dale Drive (entering campus at Graham-Hewlett Residence Hall) should be aware that the City of Wilmington has reduced the speed limit on that road from 35 miles per hour to 25 mph.
The Wilmington Police Department has instructed officers in that area to monitor speed along Wood Dale Drive, and some will be running radar. Users of Wood Dale may notice a sign indicating your speed as you travel that route. If you’re going more than 25 mph, you may want to slow down or get a ticket.

Neighbors along Wood Dale have notified the university that they have observed speeds up to 44 mph registering on the sign since it was installed. They said worst times for speeders this summer have been between 6:30 – 8:30 a.m.

The city conducted a traffic study in October, 2006, at three points along Wood Dale between Wrightsville Avenue and the intersection of Pine Hills Drive (the closest east/west street to UNCW's property). The study measured 2,391 vehicles per day at an average of 39.2 miles per hour near Wrightsville; 2,386 vehicles per day at 44.9 miles per hour about midway between Wrightsville and campus; and 2,388 vehicles per day at 41.5 miles per hour just before Pine Hills Drive. Ten cars were measured going 60-70 mph heading toward campus. The speed limit then was 35 mph.

Please do your part to be a good neighbor to residents of Wood Dale Drive.
