Greer White
Greer T. White was nominated by Dr. Randy Bobbitt of the Department of Communication Studies who said that “in addition to Greer’s full-time course load, she is helping to launch a new student organization in the Communication Studies Department.”
Greer is a communication studies major and psychology minor. She will graduate in 2005. She has been named to the National Dean’s List, UNCW’s Dean’s List and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Greer is also a member of Psi Chi, a Psychology Honor Society, and Lambda Pi Eta, a Communication Studies Honor Society. Greer is busy with many activities including an internship at Sweeney Public Relations and working on the hospitality committee at Cameron Art Museum. She is also part of the steering committee at UNCW for the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA).
On top of these UNCW honors and involvement, Greer is also very active in the Wilmington community. She is most proud of being the youngest president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1998 and was voted the Number 1 Jaycee in North Carolina. Greer is also a full-time Associate Residential Counselor for Crisis Line/Open House at Coastal Horizons Center, Inc.
In addition, Greer has also written a manual for undergraduate students at UNCW who are interested in the field of public relations. She is currently attempting to have the manual published.
When asked about the challenges she has faced as a non-traditional student, Greer said “I have faced being treated like a traditional student with regards to rules set forth by the professors. Some professors fail to see the distinction between a traditional and a non-traditional student. Many non-trads are working more than one job outside of school and juggle multiple roles. Many non-trads are professionals, parents and are trying to be successful in all of their other responsibilities.”
The Communication Studies Department has been very supportive and encouraging to Greer along her journey. She says “most of the faculty and staff are very eager to assist students both academically and professionally.” Specifically, Greer would like to thank Dr. Bobbit and Dr. David Weber for their help. Greer also wanted to thank her grandparents, her boyfriend Stephen Rogers, and her mother and father who have supported and helped her on her journey.
After graduation, Greer plans to move to Los Angeles, CA to pursue a career in Public Relations. Her areas of interest are art, music and entertainment.
Her advice to other non-trads is “focus on the big picture with regards to the future. There are many classes that can make a non-trad more marketable. It is important to use this experience to the fullest extent.”
