If you need medical attention when the Abrons Student Health Center (SHC) is closed:

If you have an emergency, call 911 to access EMS, or proceed to an emergency department (ED). The closest ED is at Cape Fear Hospital, 5301 Wrightsville Avenue. A larger ED/hospital/trauma center is at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, 2131 S. 17th Street. See directions below.

If you have an urgent problem, proceed to a local urgent care center (see list below) or to a local emergency department as appropriate.

If you are uncertain what to do about an urgent medical problem, call Vitaline at (910) 332-8021 to obtain medical advice from a registered nurse. This number automatically identifies you as a UNCW student. Feedback from the call will be sent by fax to the SHC the same day, facilitating follow-up at the SHC if needed.

Cape Fear Hospital

• Exit the front of campus onto College Road, heading south (toward Carolina Beach). Turn left on Wrightsville Avenue (about 1 mile). Proceed 1.3 miles, Cape Fear Hospital is on your left, follow the direction signs to the Emergency Department.
• Or take Hamilton Rd., left on N. MacMillan Ave., left on Wrightsville, ED is 1 mile on the left
• Or take Riegel Rd. to Rose Ave., turn right at dead-end onto Rose,  0.25 miles turn left at dead-end onto Wrightsville Ave.,  ED is 0.2 miles on left

New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC),

• Exit the front of campus onto College Road, heading south (toward Carolina Beach). Go approximately 2 miles, veer right onto Shipyard Boulevard, go 1.9 miles, turn right onto 17th Street. NHRMC is on the right, just under 1 mile. Follow the direction signs to the Emergency Department.
