The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is a rapidly growing campus with an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. The campus is located five miles from the Atlantic Ocean in southeastern North Carolina. Beginning in the Fall of 2007, the Department of Housing and Residence Life will house 3,297 residents in 8 traditional residence halls, 7 suite style buildings, and 26 apartment style buildings. Currently about 33 percent of UNCW’s student body now lives on campus and; the university expects to meet its goal of a 40 percent residential student body by fall 2009. Position Description
General Description:
The Assistant Residence Coordinator position is a nine month position in a residence hall or area of 400-600 students. The Assistant Residence Coordinator assists the Residence Coordinator in the administration of the residence hall/area. Responsibilities include staff supervision, staff training and development, student group advising, counseling, and crisis management.
Specific Responsibilities:
Hall Government Advising and Leadership Development

Serve as primary advisor for Hall Government

Aid in the development of student leadership opportunities

Assist students in developing programs within the hall/area

Develop and implement training programs for student leaders

Assist in facilitating weekly Hall Government meetings
-
Serve as a resource person for hall leaders
-
Support and assist in RHA recruitment and programming efforts
Desk Staff and RA Supervision
-
Recruit, select, train, and supervise student desk staff
-
Assist the Residence Coordinator with supervision, training, and selection of resident assistants
-
Provide evaluation of desk and resident assistant staff
-
Assume administrative duties of the Residence Coordinator in his/her absence
- Indirectly assist in the training and supervision of the Night Security staff
Administrative Duties
-
Attend weekly hall staff meetings, Hall Council meetings, meetings with supervisor, and weekly professional staff meetings

Serve on departmental and division committees
-
Maintain office hours on a weekly basis to maintain hall visibility
Counseling and Crisis Management

Respond to emergency building situations and inform appropriate personnel

Respond to crisis situations while assuming campus pager coverage responsibilities on a rotating basis from 5pm-8am each night

Act as a first response counselor for students in crisis and with personal concerns

Serve as a resource and make appropriate referrals to other campus resources

What training is provided?
Each graduate student will attend both ARC and RA training in the weeks before the start of school. ARC training is five days per week, and RA training is six days per week. Training will orient you to the facilities, policies, procedures, and resources that are available to you in your position.
When does the job begin?
An official date will be released later, but we typically begin during the last full week of July with ARC training.
How many hours per week do I work?
Most weeks average around 20-25 hours a week. You will attend weekly staff meetings with the department as well as meetings with your individual area. ARCs are also responsible for student programming association meetings, desk meetings, and office hours.
What is duty?
Graduates will take part in crisis coverage for the campus. In this capacity, graduates will help respond to assist in crisis situations, medical emergencies, and extreme disciplinary matters. Much of the initial training deals with handling these types of situations.
ARCs are assigned to campus coverage 3-4 weeks of the year. You will be responsible for holding a pager when you are on campus so that you may be contacted easily by the Housing and desk staffs.
Do we work during vacations?
Graduates are allowed to leave campus during most university holidays, but you will be expected to make sure your duties are covered when you are gone. You may be asked to stay after students depart to assist in closing the residence halls for breaks.
Can I have another job?
Generally, we do not allow students to maintain additional employment outside of the position.
Am I limited in the number of courses and times that I may enroll in class?
Graduates are encouraged to enroll in no more than 12 semester hours.
How much of my time has to be spent on campus?
Graduates typically have one weekend per month to be completely away from campus. This time must be pre-approved by your immediate supervisor. Graduates are allowed to come and go as they please while remaining in the area while not on duty.
What does our compensation include?
Our compensation includes a meal plan, furnished apartment, parking permits, and a $600/month stipend. We also offer professional development both on and off campus. As a university student employee you will be paid once a month on the 15th.
What types of professional development are available?
Conferences, extra training, sessions with the professional staff, etc are all available to the ARC staff.
What types of academic programs have graduates previously been a part of?
Previous programs that the ARCs have pursued are: History, English, Public Administration, Fine Arts/Poetry, Mathematics and Education
Is insurance available/required?
UNCW offers medical and renters insurance for a fee, but it is not required. Car insurance is required by both the state of North Carolina and UNCW.
Do we get a chance to visit?
If you are interested in visiting UNCW and the Housing department please do so!!! We look forward to meeting you. Housing does not pay for the trip’s expenses though. An interview weekend is planned for March 23-24, 2007.
