One of UNCW’s Core Values is Student Development, and goal number two of the Division of Student Affairs is to Develop Quality Staff. The Division of Student Affairs has created the Student Affairs Fellowship Program to provide professional staff exposure to service areas outside their own, to help expand their knowledge and skills, and to enhance their ability to provide exceptional support and service to UNCW students.
The objectives of the fellowship program include:
- providing 5-7 professional staff per year exposure to two (one per semester) UNCW student services area other than their own. Fellows will endeavor to gain philosophical and practical experience in these two areas;
- expanding and improving each Fellow’s knowledge and skills, which will result from working with a designated Host Mentor and Host Department, and from shadowing staff and completing and assisting with various services and projects;
- increasing each Fellow’s ability to provide exceptional support and service to UNCW students.
By completing and following an Experimental Agreement which will outline the learning objectives of the Fellow, the Host Department and its Host Mentor will provide each Fellow with a comprehensive experience associated with their functional area. The Student Affairs Fellowship Program will provide professional development through improving professional staff members’ knowledge and skills; help enhance overall support and service to UNCW students (resulting from each Fellow gaining broader contextual knowledge of two new service areas); and, will educate staff of the Division of Student Affairs about individual departments as Fellows present their experience at the Fellows Symposium at the conclusion of the academic year.
The Fellowship Program serves as a unique opportunity for cross-training within the division, by exposing professional staff to myriad management and supervisory practices and decision making processes that occur within two service areas other than their own. Optimally, the program will also help retain Student Affairs employees who may assume future leadership positions within the division.
