Peer Learning Tutors work with UNCW students currently enrolled in Basic Studies courses. Tutors assist with course content and study strategies. Tutoring occurs in the University Learning Center, located in Westside Hall, first floor (WS 1056). Sessions are conducted for an hour at a time, with up to three students in each session. All learning tutors are required to pursue certification via our training program, which has received International Tutor Program Certification status through the College Reading and Learning Association.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Upper-class standing (sophomore, junior, senior, grad student)
- 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher (at UNCW)
- Completion of course(s) to be tutored with no lower than "B" grade OR documented comparable subject mastery (e.g. CLEP scores)
- Faculty recommendation
- Demonstrated good interpersonal and communication skills

Writing Services Tutor
Peer Writing Tutors conduct writing consultations with students across the curriculum. Writing tutors focus on global revision (focus, development, audience, organization) and local revision (style, editing, etc.). All writing tutors must have qualifying experience and engage in the tutor training program, which has received International Tutor Program Certification status through the College Reading and Learning Association.
Minimum requirements for a Writing Center Undergraduate Internship:
- Upper-class standing (junior, senior, grad student).
- 3.0 or higher GPA in major (3.0 or higher cumulative GPA)
- At least 9 hours of writing or writing intensive classes beyond ENG 201
- Faculty recommendation
Minimum requirements for a Graduate Internship:
- Completed first semester of Graduate study.
- Permission of instructor or advisor.

Supplemental Instruction Leader
SI Leaders facilitate group peer study sessions for selected courses. SI Leaders are chosen based on their performance in the class, overall academic performance, faculty recommendations and ability to communicate effectively. Leaders stay abreast of the course material by attending class and meeting with the professors outside of class. They complete the homework assignments and textbook reading assignments and then conduct 3-4 study sessions each week for students currently enrolled in the course. All SI Leaders must engage in a training program, which has received International Tutor Program Certification status through the College Reading and Learning Association.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Upper-class standing (sophomore, junior, senior, grad student)
- 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher
- Completion of course(s) to be tutored with no lower than "B" grade OR documented comparable subject mastery (e.g. CLEP scores)
- Faculty recommendation
- Demonstrated good interpersonal and communication skills
- Excellent organizational skills

Math tutors conduct drop in tutoring sessions and occasional one-on-one or small group sessions with students in Math and Statistics courses. Tutoring takes place in the ULC Learning Lab during office hours. Math tutors must be outgoing, quick thinkers able to work in a sometimes loud and often changing environment. All Math tutors must engage in a tutor training program, which has received International Tutor Program Certification status through the College Reading and Learning Association.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Upper-class standing (sophomore, junior, senior, grad student)
- 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher
- Completion of course(s) to be tutored with no lower than "B" grade OR documented comparable subject mastery (e.g. CLEP scores)
- Faculty recommendation
- Demonstrated good interpersonal and communication skills
Serves as receptionist to multiple programs in a busy academic support office. Schedules tutoring sessions, answers the phone, sends emails, handles walk-in inquiries, data entry. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications include:
- detail oriented, organized and dependable
- good customer services skills and phone skills
