Nelson Reid is Professor of social welfare and Public Service Fellow in the UNCW Department of Social Work. He has held academic appoints at Ohio University, Auburn University, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, University of Cape Town, North Carolina State University, and, since 1998, at University North Carolina Wilmington. At UNCW he has served as Department Chair and as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Most recently he has been appointed by the Board of Governors as a member of the Scholars’ Council of the UNC Tomorrow Commission. |

He is the author and editor of three books, The Moral Purposes of Social Work (Nelson Hall 1993), The Professionalization of Poverty: Social Work and the Poor in the 20th Century (Aldine de Gruyter 2000) and Strengthening Small Towns and Rural Communities (NASW Press 2001). He has contributed to many NASW publishing projects including the American Social Welfare History section of the Encyclopedia of Social Work 19th Edition and the forthcoming 20th Edition. He has published numerous referred scholarly articles and book chapters and has taught for over 25 years in the areas of social welfare policy, history, ethics and social service administration. |
