What have we been doing?

Despite the blistery winter weather across all of North Carolina, Open House was a success on January 30! It provided prospective Teaching Fellows the opportunity to see our campus and talk to current UNCW Teaching Fellows. They received vital information about our program and school during the various sessions. They also toured Schwartz Hall in order to see the real life of a UNCW freshman in the Teaching Fellows Program.

Due to the snow storm that Wilmington encountered on Friday February 19, the Teaching Fellows regional screening was rescheduled for Saturday February 27. Prospective Teaching Fellows should report to Cameron Hall instead of the Education Building. The 2010 Regional Teacher Cadet Conference will be using the Education Building during the time of the regional screening for Teaching Fellows.

The Heartburn Dance had great participation and was a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. There were delicious refreshments available and something for everyone. It was a great opportunity to just mingle, while others showed off their moves on the dance floor. There was everything from a conga line to the electric slide on the dance floor, not to mention a very rhythmic Amy Rottmann showing off her moves too! The decorations were beautiful, and they set the mood for a very fun and exciting night for everyone.

The freshman Teaching Fellows were able to experience in their seminar the inspiring words of the prominent writer, educator and activist, Dr. Jonathan Kozol. He graciously answered anxious questions, and told of his experiences with the teaching profession. He was an amazing inspiration for the room full of future educators, and made a significant impression on the group. Later that night, Dr. Kozol also spoke at the Kenan Auditorium offering more words of wisdom about the educational institution and its injustices in the country.

Hello Fellows,

March has come in like a lion, and as it roars remember to brace yourself. Be the professionals that I know you all are. We must look at every challenge as a learning experience and grow from it. I know many of you are overwhelmed with classes and advising, but during those moments of “losing your mind” remember you have family that surrounds you. Use your roommates, friends, and me as a sounding board; we will remind you to breathe! So breathe.

I end my dish with this quote by William Wordsworth: The best portion of a good man’s life is his little nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love.

Hello to all the Teaching Fellows,

March is off to a nice warm snap, relieving us of the colds of winter and I am very happy about that. March is a busy month for us Fellows as we are in the search of a new director and are in the process of electing a new president and new council. March also brings the big Spring Trip to Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, MD where we will emerse ourselves in the history of our country as well as the school systems of Baltimore. I truly hope everyone had a relaxing Spring Break, and that everyone has come back ready to finish the final stretch of this academic marathon in confidence.

Trip to Baltimore and Washington D.C.

We will leave UNCW at 5:00 pm on March 25 to Baltimore, MD. On March 26, we will work with the Friendship Academy of Science and Technology in Baltimore to learn more about the school, tutor, and help remodel an old band room into a new facility for the school. On March 27 we will explore Washington, D.C. and return on March 28. This counts as a TRAVEL event. This event is full. Contact Kari Avolis for more information at kfa8458@uncw.edu

Capture the Flag

Come play a fun game of capture the flag with all of your fellow Teaching Fellows on March 18 from 7:00-8:30. It will be a battle of the classes. Your class reps will announce it and have a sign up sheet. The more people to sign up, the better the games. SO SIGN UP!!! Each class will wear the colors they wore for kickball (freshman-teal; sophomores-white; juniors-yellow; seniors-navy). TLC Conference

This event is on March 20 from 9-11:30 am in EB 162. This is a dynamic teachers conference where we will be exploring how technology, character, and leadership are going to be needed and can be used in the 21st Century.

Soaring to Greatness: Recruitment

This event is on March 27 in the Burney Center. This is annual Open House for admitted high school seniors. We need nine volunteers for this event. Contact Amy at rottmanna@uncw.edu for more information. This event is FULL.

TF Town Hall Meeting

This is an opportunity to inform Amy of issues you feel need to be addressed concerning our program, advice you may have on improving the program, or to just see Amy's smiling face. Come to the Ed. Building on April 7 at 4:00 to voice your opinion. Amy wants to make sure all of you have the opportunity to make our program beneficial for you!

School Supplies Drive

On March 22 and 23, we need volunteers to work at a table for the school supplies drive. There will be a table set up in the Union as well as in Watson. For the 4 people working the first shift, they will need to come by the teaching fellows office to get materials for the table. The closing people will need to make arrangements to have them returned back to the office.

The shifts are the following:
Union
10:30-11:30= 2 people
11:30-12:30= 2 people

Watson
10:30-11:30= 2 people
11:30- 12:30= 2 people

A Major Affair

Have any questions about your class schedule for next semester? Having trouble deciding which courses to take? etc... Come out on March 30 from 6-7:30 pm and join your fellow upperclassmen for a question and answer session in EB 162. This event is not limited to Teaching Fellows, so bring your fellow education major friends. UPPER CLASSMEN--we need help so please sign up and help us out. Pre-K Pride Day Celebration

This event enhances school readiness for four-year olds in New Hanover County who exhibit the most need. Fellows will help with face-painting at the celebration on April 17. We need 4 Fellows at each shift. The shift times are 10 am-noon and 12:00-2:00 pm. This counts as an OUTREACH event. Contact Jasie Lovick at jdl5758@uncw.edu
