Admissions

The Department of Theatre enjoys a student population of talented and self motivated young artists interested in exploring the craft of theatre.  Our department’s faculty comprises many consummate professionals who are working in the business and are eager to continue working with students who wish to explore this amazing art form.  Below is listed basic information to assist students in enrolling in both UNCW and the Department of Theatre.

UNCW Admission requirements before enrollment into the Department of Theatre include:

Incoming Freshman

  • Grade Point Average (GPA). Although there is no minimum for enrollment, students should be aware that GPA and Class Rank are given great consideration.  The average GPA for 2007-2008 enrollee was over 3.5.
  • SAT and ACT tests. (Mean SAT score was above 1150 for this academic year)
  • Recommendations from guidance counselors and core academic teachers.
  • Community involvement and extracurricular activities, talents, interests, and work experience.
  • Evidence of theatrical talent and experience

Transfer Students

  • Minimum GPA 2.50 on a 4.0 scale at all institutions attended
  • Completion of at least 24 hours of transferable credit
  • 3 hours in mathematics course

Interview

  • Set up an interview. It is important to plan a full-day visit to the campus, part of which will be your visit to the Department of Theatre. If you wish to attend a class, please schedule a visit
    M-TH; Fridays are not optimum.
  • Present your work. While auditioning and portfolio review are not required for admission, we urge you to prepare one or two minute-long monologues (from a classical and contemporary piece respectively are suitable). Prospective designers, stage managers, and technical directors should provide some evidence of work or talent in that area.
  • Be prepared. Tell us what interests you about our Department, and what your goals are at this point. We recognize that the specifics may change upon matriculation, but we need to know that you are motivated and positive about your work in theatre.
  • Keep us informed. Once you apply to be admitted into UNCW be sure to keep in touch. Should you not hear about your status or should other matters emerge regarding your situation that may impact your application, please call the theatre office.

Matriculation

  • Freshmen - you are enrolled as a member of University College, and can declare your major only after completing 26 credits. Most majors declare in their second semester of their freshman year. However, we urge pre-matriculated freshman students who will be majoring in theatre to begin taking classes in theatre immediately. You are also eligible to audition as freshmen, and participate in a number of department related events. We don't want you to get lost in the freshman shuffle, so once on board, let us know you are here and we can help guide your first year experience at UNCW.
  • Transfer students - you generally matriculate directly into the theatre major.
