Q: What is the UNCW Annual Giving Program's mission?

A: The mission of the UNCW Annual Giving Program is to find and cultivate a constituency of alumni and friends who are willing to provide financial donations on an annual basis. The purpose of the office is to continue to identify new donors to the university as well as steward existing donors.

Private gifts to the university are essential for the funding of various academic, athletic and co-curricular programs at UNCW. Gifts help the university continue to offer the  most powerful learning experience possible to UNCW students.

Q: Why give to the UNCW Annual Giving Program?

A: UNCW appreciates the funding it receives from the state of North Carolina. However, state appropriations and tuition and fees only make up about 62% of UNCW's budget. Private donations that enable the university to continue to add new programs

Q: What does my gift support?

A: Gifts to the annual giving program provide direct support to academic programs, scholarship, computer labs, teaching and research awards, to name a few examples. The UNCW Annual Giving Program enables you, as a donor, to designate which area receives your support. You can choose if you want your donation to be restricted to one department or if you want to give it to unrestricted funds. Please see Areas to Support for more information.

Q: What can unrestricted funds do for the university?

A: By giving an unrestricted gift, you enable the university to put that donation toward the greatest need, whether it is to purchase new desks for a classroom or new computers to help alleviate an overcrowded computer lab. Unrestricted funds give the university the opportunity to put a donation to use immediately.

Q: Why do I get a call from UNCW each year?

A: The Annual Phonathon gives you, as a donor, an opportunity to speak directly with current students about UNCW. Through the phonathon, UNCW students have the chance to personally thank donors for their financial contributions and to request their continued support. These phone calls also give the students a chance to give you and other donors news about upcoming events on campus. In addition, the phonathon provides an opportunity for donors to confirm, or update, their address and other information with the university.

Q: What is the alumni participation rate?

The alumni participation rate is the percent of UNCW alumni who made a gift to the university within the last fiscal year. This participation rate is one of the factors that is considered when groups like the U.S. News and World Report do university rankings. For example, in fiscal year 2005-2006, the alumni participation exceeded 13 percent.

Q: Is my gift tax deductible?

A: Yes!!! Your gifts to UNCW are tax deductible under the applicable sections of the Internal Revenue Service.

Q: What are matching gifts?

A: Many companies offer a matching gift option which allows you to double or even triple your gift to the university. Some companies, such as Exxon, give $3 for every $1 that an employee donates. In order to do a matching gift, we must first determine if your company has a program. Stop by your personnel office for information about how to initiate a matching gift.
