Summer 2008: June 17-21

The Young Writers' Workshop is an annual five-day conference that brings together up to 35 high school students from all over the state and region to study the craft of writing. The 2008 Workshop
will be held from Tuesday, June 17th to Saturday, June 21st on the UNCW campus.

Young Writers Workshop attendees participate in daily creative writing exercises, craft lectures, writing workshops, and readings. Because the workshop is held on the UNCW campus, students stay in the
residence halls and take their meals in the dining facility. The workshop is directed and run by UNCW Department of Creative Writing MFA students and faculty, giving the attendees a chance to study their craft with published, working writers.

The workshop is a valuable and exciting experience for young writers interested in learning more about their craft. Although students are asked to submit a work of creative writing in one genre (poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction), attendees will receive instruction in all genres.

The YWW Experience: Workshop attendees stay in on-campus housing with full-time creative writing graduate student counselors who are available at all times for unstructured interaction, assistance with writing projects, and moral support. Participants spend approximately six hours every day in writing exercises, peer workshops, field trips, and craft presentations. Participants gain experience through nightly readings of their own work. Students also have time to explore our beautiful campus, visit the bookstore and library, and get to know other young writers.

The Young Writers' Workshop is a place for aspiring writers to experiment, meet other writers, and follow their creative interests in a safe, nonjudgmental environment.
